Vietnam medic was a "guardian angel" in Decorah

Posted: Thu, Dec 3, 2015 6:56 PM

Not quite 50 years ago on Highway 9 between Decorah and Waukon, a medic home on leave from Vietnam saved a man's life.  Now a Winona, Minnesota man and woman are trying to find out more about someone they are calling "a guardian angel."

Rocky Olson got his leg caught in a power take-off and started bleeding.  That's when a medic wearing a white shirt and navy pants stopped, tore off his white shirt, tied it to Rocky's leg and began applying pressure to stop the bleeding.  The medic then took Olson to Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital.

Olson is convinced he would have died without the medic's help.  But he never got the name of the medic or was able to thank him.  "He just seemed to disappear like a guardian angel who did what he needed to do and then left," says Olson.  He and his wife are asking for help in locating the man.
