The roof of the Winneshiek County Jail is leaking

The Winneshiek County Jail needs a new roof--one that probably will cost at least $60,000.

Representatives from the Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department met with county supervisors on Monday to lay out the possibilities--a rubber roof that would cost at least $60,000 or a vinyl roof that would be more expensive initially, but might hold up better.

Sheriff's Department employees say there have been "major leaks" Inside the jail, sending water streaming over the walls.  It has gotten so bad that workers put tarps up to keep computers from getting water on them.

The Sheriff's Department so far has been in touch with Moss Roofing of West Union and Allen Roofing of Monona.  Several other roofing companies were contacted, but didn't want to bid on the project.

County supervisors were updated on the situation Monday.  Representatives from the two roofing companies might be asked to appear before a future county board meeting to explain the differences between the two types of roofing.
