The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department says it has received a few reports of vehicles failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks along the new bicycle/pedestrian trail east of Decorah.  The Sheriff's Office has also been made aware of several incidents regarding vehicles failing to yield to emergency vehicles while responding to fire and ambulance calls.

Because of those reports, deputies are reminding the public on what the Iowa Code requires: "The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way, slowing down or stopping if need be to so yield, to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection"

"Upon the immediate approach of an authorized emergency vehicle…displaying red and blue lights… or when the driver is giving audible signal by siren…the driver of every other vehicle shall yield the right-of-way and shall… pull to the right shoulder of roadway and stop and remain in such position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed…"
