Fort Atkinson resident Dan Neuzil received Northeast Iowa Community College's "Outstanding Retiree Service Award" on Monday.

Neuzil is a retired NICC maintenance department electrician and plumber who served the College from 1972 to 1992.

A 1946 graduate of Ft. Atkinson High School, Neuzil served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, then returned to work in his older brother Bernard's electrical, plumbing and heating business in Ft. Atkinson from 1952 until 1972.

In 1972 he applied for a position on the NICC maintenance staff.  Said Neuzil, "They were such excellent people to work with, and all friendly and very knowledgeable."

Community service has been important to Neuzil.  In 1955 he became a founding member of the Ft. Atkinson Fire Department and continued to serve as a firefighter for nearly five decades.  He's a member of the Huber-Steffes Post of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter, the backpack food program and a volunteer repairman for local residents. As a veteran, he participates in civic events, military funerals, parades and dedications.

In June, Governor Terry Branstad honored Neuzil with the 2015 Volunteer of the Year Award.
