Local volunteers from SHIIP can help answer Medicare questions

Posted: Sun, Oct 18, 2015 10:43 AM

Every year Iowans on Medicare can decide if they want to change health insurance plans.  The changes can be made from October 15th to December 7th and take effect January 1st.

It can be confusing to wade through all the competing plans, but there are local volunteers in Decorah who will help free of charge.  Volunteer SHIIP counselors are available by appointment Tuesdays through Thursdays in Decorah by calling 563-387-3036.

SHIIP counselors can help you understand your current plan by:
•    checking your current Part D or Medicare Advantage plan to make sure your drugs are covered at the lowest cost and with the least amount of restrictions
•    reviewing your employer coverage and comparing it to other Medicare options
•    checking to see if you are eligible for Part D "Extra Help"
•    understanding your options if you do not currently have a drug plan

Plans can change their coverage and costs from year to year, so comparing plans during the open enrollment is critical.

SHIIP is a free, confidential service of the state of Iowa.  You can also visit www.therightcalliowa.gov for help.
