Decorah resident Barb Post knows how important quick medical care and updated medical equipment can be.  One evening she and husband Bill found a little time from their busy lives to enjoy a movie together at home. Suddenly Barb made a slight sound and collapsed at Bill's side.  After calling 911, Bill began applying CPR, which First Responders and Winneshiek Medical Center paramedics continued when they arrived. The First Responders and paramedics were able to bring Barb back to life.  She was then transported to WMC and airlifted to Rochester.

Barb had experienced Sudden Cardiac Death.  Unlike having a heart attack or cardiac arrest, Barb's heart had truly stopped.  She can't remember what happened that night but believes that God was with her and put all the right things and people in motion to save her life.

Bill says, "They all went above and beyond what is required of them.  So often we may take the work of emergency responders for granted, and never take the time to truly appreciate what they do for our community every day."

Barb says, "I have been given a second chance at life, and am taking that chance to fully appreciate my community, friends and family. I feel fortunate to live in a community where we take care of each other."

Winneshiek Medical Center officials say the story of the Posts is one example of why it's important for a community to have good ambulance service.  The WMC Foundation is currently raising money to purchase a new ambulance for the hospital.  A 2016 fully-equipped ambulance is estimated to cost $232,000.  $60,000 has been raised so far for a new one.
