The South Winneshiek FFA Chapter has received a $2,000 "Working Here Fund" grant from Farm Credit of America.  The money will be used to help pay input costs and rent for a new research and test plot on 10 acres leased from a local farmer.

Students will rotate corn and soybeans, utilizing equipment that dates to the 1970s or earlier to demonstrate that genetics have a greater impact on yields than new, modern equipment. Students also will use the plot to learn about marketing decisions.

"Our goal is to have a 100 percent student-run test plot, where high school agricultural students take full ownership in the production, marketing and promotion of corn and soybeans," said South Winneshiek teacher Melissa Brincks.

Students will use their own and their parents' restored farm equipment to plant and harvest crops. The equipment will be on display during field days to provide a history lesson in the evolution of farm equipment.
