Decorah's bald eagles appear to like the rebuilt nest

In July strong winds took down a tree branch on which the new Decorah Bald Eagles' nest had been built--and the nest came crashing to the ground.

Raptor Resource Project volunteers decided to rebuild the nest by constructing a small nest roughly 5 feet tall by 5 feet wide in a tree near the location of the former nest.

The volunteers weren't sure their plan to bring back the bald eagles would work.  Now the results are known--the plan appears to have worked.

Beginning last Thursday, the nest cameras picked up the sight of the eagles bringing sticks into the new nest, placing them in a spot that needed some additional sticks.

"We are very pleased that our experimental project appears to be working!" said a news release by Raptor Resource, which added, "Our success will allow fans to continue following their beloved eagles, and also provides a valuable wildlife management tool for bald eagles and other birds of prey."

The eagles can be watched live at www.ustream.tv/decoraheagles.

A video of the bald eagle parents is posted with this story.
