Flu season is in the air and it's important to get your flu shot. Decorahnews.com asked Dr. Dan Wientzen, DO, Family Medicine, at Gundersen Decorah Clinic, a handful of questions about preventing catching the flu bug during the October through April flu season which peaks in the U.S. between December and February.
"A flu vaccine is needed every season for two reasons," Dr. Wientzen said. "First, the body's immune response from vaccination declines over time, so an annual vaccine is needed for optimal protection. Second, because flu viruses are constantly changing, the formulation of the flu vaccine is reviewed each year and sometimes updated to keep up with changing flu viruses."
"Flu is highly contagious," Dr. Wientzen said. — People can spread flu to others 6 feet away. — "Most experts think that flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk," he said. "These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs." Less often it's spread by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose. While the flu virus can infect all ages, it is highest among children.
Tips for prevention: The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine each season, Dr. Wientzen said. Options include a flu shot (anyone 6 months or older) and nasal spray (healthy people 2 to 49 years of age who are not pregnant). Stay away from sick people and stay home if sick; wash hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub; linens, eating utensils, and dishes belonging to those who are sick should not be shared without washing thoroughly first; frequently touched surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected at home, work and school, especially if someone is ill.
"The influenza vaccine is extremely safe," Dr. Wientzen said. Serious side effects from the vaccine are very rare. You cannot catch the flu from the vaccine.
