September temperatures close to record-breaking

Posted: Thu, Oct 1, 2015 8:04 PM

September weather in Decorah nearly was record-breaking.

Decorah weather observer Richard Bernatz says temperatures averaged 68.6 degrees during the month.  Since 1894 only one September had a higher average temperature—1931, when it averaged 69.3 degrees.

Bernatz says there were no records set in Decorah in September, but 24 out of the 30 days had higher than average high temperatures.  September temperatures also stayed above the freezing mark—the lowest temperature was 36 degrees on September 30th.

September precipitation in Decorah totaled 2.03 inches, with more than half of that coming September 8th.  Compared with the other 122 years of weather data, September 2015 was drier than all but 34 other years.  For the last 12 months, Decorah has received one inch less than normal of precipitation.
