On a day that was just perfect for taking a walk or riding a bike, the Freeport Trail was officially dedicated on Sunday.

Trails From Freeport board member Dale Putnam pronounced the trail "beautiful" and "exceptional" and noted "everyone uses it."  Fellow board member Heidi Rockweiler noted that construction of the trail was "totally a community effort."

The Freeport community was out in force on Sunday afternoon at the Freeport Park for an event that included food, prizes and a program.  Then Trails from Freeport board members Andy Bonnet, Kelly Brickley, Tom Hauber, Dale Putnam, Heidi Rockweiler, Jerry Weis and Dan Wientzen cut a ribbon to signify the opening of the trail--and the audience cheered.

The Winneshiek County Board paid Skyline Construction $2,381,277.10 to do the trail project.  Winneshiek County received a $1.6 million TIGER grant from the federal government to help pay for the project and also used funds raised by the Trails From Freeport group, Farm to Market funds and local road funds.
