The Decorah City Council's Streets Committee is asking that a public hearing be held Monday, October 5th, on the possibility of buying a new street sweeper for the city.
The committee met briefly Tuesday morning, voting just to schedule a public hearing, but not taking action of whether to endorse such a purchase.
The current street sweeper is a 1999 model that has been having problems with an auxiliary engine. That engine had a life expectancy of 5,000 hours--but has been used for a total of 10,000 hours. Repairing the engine would be very expensive--and would still leave the city with a 16-year-old street sweeper. The city has received an estimate of $234,000 for a new street sweeper.
Streets Committee members also briefly discussed whether a leaf vacuum should be purchased as well.
