The Decorah Public Library history book group will discuss Harrison Salisbury's "The New Emperors: China in the Era of Mao and Deng" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 24th on the second floor of the library.
Books are now available for checkout at the front desk. The group is open to the public and newcomers are encouraged to attend.
Salisbury's book chronicles the rise of Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping, who lived and ruled much as did their predecessors of the last two thousand years. The tale plays out within the secret pleasure gardens of Zhongnanhai, the maze of palaces in Beijing created by Kublai Khan and first reported by Marco Polo.
Salisbury, a Pulitzer Prize winner, has written widely on China and the Soviet Union. He was for many years Moscow correspondent of the New York Times.
