It's official--the newest shelter in Phelps Park has been officially dedicated as "Kaitlyn's Shelter."
The shelter was made possible through donations from the family and friends of Kaitlyn Quandahl, who lost her battle with cancer in 2013 at the age of 5.
A second phase of the project will be done this fall when an asphalt trail to the shelter will be installed, opening up to a large approach with a picnic grill on the hard surface, making Kaitlyn's Shelter fully handicapped accessible. Decorah Parks and Recreation Department is also adding a handicapped child's swing and is looking into more handicapped specialized play opportunities for kids in the future.
Kaitlyn's family members donated money to the project and helped park crew members in construction of the shelter. Many of the timbers for this shelter were donated from Kleppe Logging, while the rest came from old oak trees that fell in the park and were milled.
