NICC will offer its first ever intercollegiate athletics program this fall.
The NICC Sports Shooting Program will compete against seven other community colleges in Iowa and the Iowa State University, the University of Iowa and Simpson College. Mike Klimesh of Spillville has been named head coach of the NICC Sports Shooting Program.
Says Klimesh, "The sport's popularity has grown exponentially, and now high school athletes can continue to participate in the sport they love at NICC."
NICC Sports Shooting Program athletes will begin competing in individual and team target shooting events this fall, and as the college's participation grows, the NICC squad may compete in skeet and trap events in the future, Klimesh added.
"
Peosta students will be developing their shooting skills at a practice range provided by the Izaak Walton League in Dubuque County. We are currently in the process of selecting a practice site for Calmar campus student athletes," he said.
Klimesh is currently the coach of the South Winneshiek High School Trap Team and the president of the South Winneshiek Trap Team Board. South Winneshiek High School's sports shooting team placed 4th out of 232 high school squads in Iowa in 2014.
