New regulation is aimed at protecting area veterans

You might have seen commercials for companies or individuals offering to help veterans get their benefits--for a fee.

Now a law has been passed that all prospective clients of these businesses must be given a written statement disclosing that veterans may apply for the same services for free through the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs or County Veterans Affairs Offices.

Any individual who violates and doesn't provide this written statement to a potential client faces a maximum civil penalty for each violation.

The Winneshiek County Veterans Affairs Office says it is urging veterans to contact them for free assistance.
