Winneshiek County officials are edging closer to drawing up a county policy requiring that if you drive a truck for the county, you will have to have a DOT Medical Card. The card is currently required for state highway employees, but not for county employees.
County officials say if they are a county driver who returns to work sooner than state rules outline, and that driver is involved in an accident, Winneshiek County would be at risk for being sued.
The proposed new policy would require a DOT Medical Card to be issued or reviewed by the county's designated physician before a worker could return to work. When the policy is drafted, county officials will share it with union members for comments.
