National Safe Digging Day was observed on Tuesday.  It's a day to remind the public about the "Call Before You Dig" law in Iowa, which applies at all times, to homeowners and contractors alike, whether you're setting a fencepost or excavating a basement.

In Iowa, a toll-free call to 811 reaches Iowa One-Call, the free service that arranges for professionals to mark the location of underground utility lines with flags, spray paint or both. You can also enter your request at www.DigSafeWait48.com.

Every six minutes, an underground utility line is damaged because someone didn't call 811 at least two business days before digging.

City of Decorah workers spent Tuesday making sure they were digging safely.  Work is being done along the swimming pool fencing, with crews contacting 8-1-1 first to make sure all underground utilities were marked.
