A five kilometer walk/run/bike will be held in Decorah on October 3rd in memory of the late Sena Hanson of Waukon and all victims of domestic violence.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Domestic Abuse Resource Center at Helping Services.  More information about the event is available at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sena-Marie-Hanson-Downing-Memorial/158380158824?sk=timeline

In 2009 Hanson was killed by her husband, Decorah native Jonathan Downing, while the two were living in Tennessee, where he was stationed.

Downing, a 1995 Decorah High School graduate, originally was charged with first degree murder.  But a jury did not convict him of that charge, instead returning a guilty verdict to a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter.  The judge in the case in 2012 gave Downing the maximum possible sentence of six years in prison. He was released from prison on February 11th of last year--having spent four and a half years in prison.
