An Eastern Iowa native who lived in Decorah for a year is one of four remaining contestants on a History Channel reality show.

Lucas Miller is a contestant on "Alone," which airs 9:00 p.m. Thursdays on the History Channel.  Miller and nine other contestants were turned loose on Vancouver Island, given a camera and a list of 40 items from which they could choose ten items to take with them.  The History Channel describes the program as "Ten men enter the Vancouver Island wilderness carrying only what they can fit in a small backpack. They are alone in harsh, unforgiving terrain with a single mission – stay alive as long as they can. These men must hunt, build shelters and fend off predators. They will endure extreme isolation and psychological distress as they plunge into the unknown and document the experience themselves. No camera crew. No producers. It is the ultimate test of man's will."

Miller chose a tent, a sleeping bag, tarp, ax, saw, a 9-inch blade knife, 25 fish hooks, 200 yards of line, a striker kit for starting fires and woolen clothing to take with him.  The choices have been good ones because Miller is still on the program after six other contestants were voted off the island. Last week's program featured quite a bit of Miller's footage.  Even though a big storm blew through the island, Miller's tent shelter held together and he was even able to find a bunch of mushrooms to add to his diet.
