The Decorah Police Department is beginning the expensive job of upgrading its communications equipment. The change-over is coming about because of the requirement to switch to narrow band transmissions.
Decorah Police Chief Bill Nixon on Monday night told Decorah City Council members that the first step in the project will be to build a new tower to replace the KVIK tower on Highway 9 west of Decorah. The new tower will be two miles closer to Decorah and will do a better job of providing a strong signal to the community.
Nixon says the site of the new tower will be property that the Decorah School District owns on Twin Springs Road just off Highway 9. In exchange for use of the school district's property, the police department will allow the school district to use space on the tower.
