Winneshiek County Sheriff Dan Marx says his department has begun a speed limit enforcement in the area of the Wiltgen Quarry on Canoe Valley Road after getting complaints from neighbors that trucks were not observing the 25-mile-an-hour speed limit.
"They're legitimate complaints," Marx says of the phone calls his department has gotten from neighbors of the quarry. When the opening of the quarry was first being discussed, county officials debated requiring the company to spread water on nearby roads in an effort to control dust. Instead they imposed the lower 25 mile-an-hour speed limit.
Marx says sheriff's deputies have taken their radar units and set up near the quarry. But he noted, "At the first glimpse of a squad car, they're model citizens." Marx says the speed enforcement effort will continue and he promises that if dump trucks are clocked exceeding the speed limit, deputies will write tickets.
