Most of Iowa's 99 County Recorders are in Decorah this week, attending a meeting of the Iowa County Recorders at Luther College and other locations.
Johnson County Recorder Kim Painter is this year's president of the group. She says county recorders have many dealings with the Iowa DNR, Iowa Department of Health, Iowa Department of Revenue and other state agencies, so a big part of statewide meetings is to get updates on new laws being considered by the state legislature. "Any time legislation affects one of those agencies, it affects us," she tells decorahnews.com.
The conference also provide training to county recorders on matters such as ID theft, data security and hiring practices. County recorders can also work through Iowa State University to earn certifications.
The county recorders will meet again Friday morning, but will head back home Friday afternoon. Painter says she has enjoyed spending time in Decorah: "The farther north I drove, the more beautiful it became…I intend to come back," she said.
