Tobacco-free workshop is Thursday

Posted: Wed, Jun 24, 2015 4:22 PM

Northeast Iowa 8th through 12th graders on Thursday will attend an Iowa Students for Tobacco Education and Prevention summit in Waverly.

This year's summit focuses on the American Legacy Foundation's "Truth Campaign."  Since the campaign launched in 2000, national youth smoking rates have been driven down to an historic low of 8 percent.

Even so, 5.6 million American youth are at risk for premature death from tobacco use. Two members of Legacy's Youth Activism team will attend the summit to discuss the program.

"This isn't your typical youth conference," said ISTEP President Johnny Culver. "We emphasize youth leadership and peer-to-peer education."

The 2015 ISTEP Summit is free to 8th through 12th grade students to attend.  Register at www.ISTEPsummit.org.
