NICC is discussing building a new beef barn facility at the Calmar campus.
The NICC Board has approved preliminary plans, specifications and form of contract for a new beef barn, which would be located just north of Iowa's Dairy Center, replacing an aging facility. The new barn is a mono slope beef shelter and will be used by Beef Science Technology, Large Animal Veterinary Technician, Agriculture Business and Dairy Science students, according to NICC vice president of finance and administration John Noel.
"The actual management of a beef cattle herd is something very valuable for us to teach our students," Noel said. "Our ag instructors are excited about adding this structure to our campus to enhance the education of our students."
The facility's estimated construction cost is approximately $850,000. The facility will have areas to house and feed a 100-head beef cattle herd and will contain a classroom and public gathering area.
NICC will hold a public hearing at 3:00 p.m. July 20th on the Calmar campus on the plans and specifications for the facility.
