Decorah High School will kick off its summer session on Monday. At 10:30 a.m. students will learn about health related careers from Decorah Fre Chief Mike Ashbacher, who will discuss the career path that led to him becoming a Flight EMT and Decorah Fire Chief. Students will have the opportunity to see first-hand the Life Flight helicopter, Decorah ambulance, and one of the fire trucks.
This year's summer program at DHS will highlight career opportunities in the the health care field, sustainable eco-systems, engineering, and the relationship between healthy lifestyles and brain function.
Decorah High School has partnered with NICC and HAWC to design and implement these programming opportunities. Teachers involved in the summer program are Tyler Balow, John Condon, Paul Cutting, Dana Einck, Tim Hayes, Brad Johansen, Allysen Lovstuen, Joel Rollinger and Pat Trewin.
During the first week of the summer session, students will learn from area experts and business leaders as they talk about career paths, education requirements and job opportunities. Tours of area businesses are also a part of the learning opportunity. During weeks two and three, students will be involved in hands-on experiences related to the career area of their specific interest.
This is the third summer in which the summer program has been available for area high school students. To learn more about the summer program, contact Kim Sheppard at Decorah High School.
