Sheriff's Department releases results of Special Traffic Enforcement Program

The Winneshiek County Sheriff's Department has released the results of its Special Traffic Enforcement Program from May 13th through May 31st.  The goal of Iowa's STEP program is to help instill safe driving habits in all motorists.

The recent enforcement wave resulted in 51 additional traffic citations and warnings that included three drunk driving arrests, five arrest warrants served, one Interdiction/Canine Search, two Narcotics arrests, investigation of 18 motor vehicle accidents (three with personal injuries reported) and rendering assistance to 13 motorists using Winneshiek County roadways.   

A survey conducted in Winneshiek County prior to the STEP showed that 94 percent of vehicle occupants were using their seatbelts.  The post-enforcement survey showed 97 percent of vehicle occupants were using their seatbelts.
