Firepits like the one pictured above have gotten very popular recently. But they're still illegal in the City of Decorah.
Decorah City Council members on Monday were presented with a summary about the city's open burning ordinance (Chapter 8.32). The ordinance for the most part forbids open burning. There are some exceptions, such as campfires at the city campground, school and community bonfires and cookfires such as barbeque grills on private property.
But firepits are not one of the exceptions. City Manager Chad Bird told city council members they could discuss adding firepits to the list of exceptions, but Public Safety committee chair Bill Wagner told his fellow city council members, "What we have now seems to work."
Wagner's committee will meet in July. He says he's willing to discuss the issue if any other committee members are interested.
