Tuition costs are going up July 1st at Northeast Iowa Community College.
The NICC Board of Trustees has approved the increase of $4 per credit hour, meaning tuition and fees per credit hour will rise from its current rate of $163 per hour to $167 per hour. The NICC Board had originally said it would hold tuition costs steady for next year.
BUt NICC officials say the tuition increase is necessary because of an atmosphere of uncertainty with the Iowa legislature's state general aid allocation to community colleges for next fiscal year, combined with rising costs in higher education.
Said NICC vice president of finance and administration John Noel, "After having kept tuition and fees constant for three years, we now making a modest increase of less than 2.5 percent. NICC does not expect the increase to place an unreasonable financial burden on students. For example, students who enroll in the minimum 12 credits at NICC to be defined as full-time students will see a net increase of $48 to their semester cost, or $96 per year."
