The Luther Book Shop finds a new home for used books

Recently Luther Book Shop manager Deanna Casterton and Gustavus Adolphus Book Shop manager Molly Yunkers attended the same conference.  The two are friends and always make a point to sit down and bounce ideas off each other.

As they were wrapping up their conversation at the conference, Yunkers asked Casterton, "Does Luther have a summer reading program?"  Not only was the answer to that question, "Yes," but Casterton and Yunkers realized that Gustavus' faculty/staff summer read, "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," was Luther's 2012 summer read.

That hatched a program to have the Luther Book Shop collect used copies of "Lacks" and ship them to Gustavus Adolphus College.  To encourage this sustainable tradition, the Luther Book Shop is giving people who bring the book to the book shop--college and community members alike--a coupon for 25 percent off one item, including clearance.  The book copies must be brought in no later than Friday, May 22nd.

Says Casterton, "This is a wonderful way to recycle, re-purpose and reuse educational resources. We are going to continue this tradition whenever possible."

The idea is catching on.  Gustavus and Central College are now doing a used book shipment after Central realized that Gustavus read a book a year ago and Central is reading that book this summer.  So Gustavus is sending copies of "Where Am I Eating" by Kelsey Timmerman to Central to read this summer

Luther is sending copies of "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" free of charge to Gustavus and Gustavus is sending copies of "Where Am I Eating" free of charge to Central.
