Work on the Freeport Trail will begin this Friday, according to an employee of Skyline Construction.
The Winneshiek County Board has hired Skyline Construction for the project after they submitted a bid of $2,381,277.10. Winneshiek County received a $1.6 million TIGER grant from the federal government to help pay for the project. It will also use Farm to Market funds, local road funds and funds raised by the Trails From Freeport group.
County Engineer Lee Bjerke earlier urged supervisors to approve the bid, saying, "For what the county's going to get versus what we're having to pay, we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth."
