The Decorah Historic Preservation District will sponsor a presentation at 6:00 p.m. Monday by Decorah contractor David Wadsworth about historic window replacement and preservation. The free program will be held in the mezzanine of the Decorah Public Library.
At the same time, Commission members are working on a proposed Downtown Decorah Historic District. If the area receives National Historic District designation there could be tax credits for onwers of buildings within the area who complete approved substantial historic renovations and improvements to both front and back areas of properties. Supporters say the Historic District designation would also boost tourism.
The Historic District designation would not restrict building owners from making non-historic renovations to their buildings--or even demolishing the buildings.
The Decorah Historic Preservation Commission is working to raise $6,000 in donations as part of application for a $30,000 grant application. The grant money would be used to cover application costs and fees foir consultant Dr Jan Olive Full, who will assist and advise the commission throughout the application process.
