Decorah native Parker Beard, a Luther College sophomore, now is being featured on Luther's work study web page.
At Luther Beard is a member of the garden crew and Cafeteria to Community program, where he is responsible for planting, caring for, harvesting and delivering the produce in Luther's greenhouse to dining services. As part of the Cafeteria to Community program, Beard packages leftover food from the cafeteria into containers, freezes them and delivers the meals to a local food pantry.
Beard said that, during his time in this position, he has learned how to work well with others and how to coordinate groups of volunteers. He also said "my experience has given me a joy and passion for growing food and feeding others, which I think will be an important part of my future."
Beard, an environmental studies and business major, is the son of Daniel and Bonnie Beard of Decorah. He is a 2012 graduate of Decorah High School.
