Last year three radio stations located in Mason City, Charles City and New Hampton organized an ATV ride through Howard and Winneshiek Counties.  Around 75 ATV riders took part in the ride along gravel roads.

The organizers are asking for permission to do the ATV ride again this year in Winneshiek County--but county officials are now having second thoughts.  Supervisor Floyd Ashbacher noted that the roads the ATVs would drive on "aren't the bets roads" for such a rally.  Several supervisors noted that ATV manufacturers state that ATVs "are not recommended to be driven on hard surfaces."

County Engineer Lee Bjerke says "None of us like it," so county officials will do further study of issues raised by the application--especial questions related to insurance liability and coverage.
