Allen Kush of rural Cresco drives over 3,000 miles a month across Iowa, setting up and organizing product displays in various retail stores. The problem was, all those miles traveled put stress on his car, often leading to breakdowns.
Then the NEICAC Transit "Wheels For Work" program stepped in with a zero percent interest load that allowed him to buy a better car. "This has been a lifesaver for us," said Allen's wife, Jackie. The two just celebrated paying off the balance on the car loan.
Now NEICAC is publicizing the program for other income-eligible employed individuals and families living in Winneshiek, Allamakee, Clayton, Fayette or Howard County. NEICAC staffers work with eligible applicants to find a high quality affordable used vehicle that meets program requirements. NEICAC then contracts with the participant to purchase the vehicle. The program also includes a financial education component as part of the loan application process. NEICAC Transit recently made its eighth loan since the program began with the Kush family in October 2013.
Interested people are encouraged to call NEICAC Transit Director Curt McNew at (563) 387-4928 to determine eligibility.
