Fall from moving car leads to the death of a Rockford, Iowa man in Decorah

A Rockford, Iowa man has died as a result of injuries suffered in a fall from a moving car on Ice Cave Road Sunday evening.

Decorah Police say 31-year-old Chad Schaffer was a backseat passenger in a car being driven by James Thorne of Decorah.  Schaffer climbed out of the right rear passenger window while the car was moving, according to a witness who was jogging on the road at the time.  Schaffer lost his balance and fell onto Ice Cave Road outside the entrance to Dunning Springs.

Paramedics and First Responders were already on the scene when police arrived.  Schaffer was taken to Winneshiek Medical Center by ambulance.  From there he was later airlifted to Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse, where he died on Monday.
