As a culminating event for the Iowa History and Government Units, Decorah Middle School 5th graders traveled to Des Moines earlier this month to tour the Capitol.
Students got to see where the state governing bodies meet, gained additional history about the Capitol building, and learned about famous Iowans at the Iowa Hall of Pride.
The students also got to meet with State Representative Darrell Branhagen of Decorah and ask questions.
"My favorite part was the Capitol," said 5th grader Andie Hafner, who added, "I liked to see how they vote for a bill." "Des Moines was a real treat," said Brody Young, who said, "My favorite parts were seeing the USS Iowa model and going up into the dome." Ruby Sullivan added, "I loved Des Moines! The Capitol was so beautiful, and the Iowa Hall of Pride was so much fun!"
Robyn Sullivan stated, "My favorite part to tour in the Capitol Building was the law library."
The cost of the trip was paid in part through magazine sales and from the support of the PTO
