The "Oedipus and Antigone" outdoor statue at Luther College has apparently been vandalised.
Luther security guards Sunday morning noticed what is being called "severe discoloration" on the statue. "Oedipus and Antigone" was donated to the school by Luther College professor emeritus of religion and classics Wilfred Bunge and his wife, 1951 Luther College graduate Ruth Jensen Bunge. It is located next to the Center for Faith and Life and is perhaps the most-photographed outdoor sculpture on campus.
Luther College art faculty members have been working to figure out what was done to the statue and to repair the damage. It appears some sort of chemical was thrown on the statue.
Luther College security guards and Decorah Police are also working to figure out what happened. They're asking that anyone who might have seen people near the statue on Saturday night or early Sunday morning contact either Luther or Decorah officers.
Art faculty members have already done some repairs to the statue and are planning to do more.
In the meantime, the question remains: "Who would have thrown chemicals on the statue--and why?"
