This is "Money Smart Week," part of a public awareness campaign to promote financial education across all age groups. NICC Calmar is scheduling a wide range of activities this week in support of the campaign.
A "Geocache for College Cash" contest will encourage students to scan a QR code with their smart phone or tablet and answer questions about budgeting, credit scores and identity theft. Four Calmar Campus winners will each receive a $250 scholarship.
An identity theft display at the NICC Calmar Library will help students prevent identity theft, since college students are high targets for identity theft.
A "Dash for Stash Contest" from Tuesday through Friday will encourage students to answer questions regarding investor education topics. One winner in Iowa will be selected randomly and will receive $1,000 to open or add to an IRA.
A "Piggy Bank Pageant" on Tuesday and Wednesday at the NICC Calmar Library will allow students to create a piggy bank out of recycled materials. Photos of banks will be posted on the Money Smart Week Iowa Pinterest site, and prizes will be awarded.
Finally, at 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the Wilder Business Center registered investment advisor William Thorne will discuss financial security and reaching retirement goals. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to attend. No financial products will be promoted.
