Chair of the MetroNet Board, City Manager Chad Bird, recently sent a letter to the six anchor members of the MetroNet asking for input in regard to expansion of membership and services (including residential) beyond the current member list.
Although discussion at the Decorah Community School Board was limited Monday night, the Board agreed that MetroNet Board discussions should continue regarding expansion of membership and/or services to other entities (public or private). A similar "buy in" to what the current anchor members have invested would be appropriate if other parties are interested.
Some members of the School Board appeared to have a "cool" stance on the "municipal utility" concept, but were not necessarily closed. Kurt DeVore, Director of Information Systems and Instructional Technology (also a member of the MetroNet Board), said such a project could run as much as $20M, take several years to develop infrastructure, and require voter approval. However, there could be various models of how such a utility could be operated or financed. There has been some local interest expressed in terms of utilizing the MetroNet for less expensive and better internet access for residents, businesses, and the associated economic development opportunities.
MetrNet anchor members include: Luther College, City of Decorah, Winneshiek County, Decorah Community Schools, Winneshiek Medical Center, and Upper Explorerland Regional Planning Commission.
