Decorah implements Reduction in Force policy

Three elementary special education teachers will be losing their jobs for next year in the Decorah Schools. One Monday night the Decorah Community School Board accepted the reduction in force recommendation from Superintendent Mike Haluska, consistent with the established district policies and processes for such reduction.

Haluska cited a decline in needs for special needs students, specifically noting:

• students moving out of the district,
• students moving into mainstream classes,
• neighboring districts beginning special education programs that will serve students who had previously attended in Decorah, and
• cost of maintaining programs at current teaching levels
