Five new digital message signs will be installed by the Iowa Department of Transportation in the Cedar Rapids area—and Voltmer Inc. of Decorah has been hired to do the work.

Voltmer's bid of $755,268 was the low bid on a project to install three new digital message signs along Interstate 380 in Cedar Rapids and two others along Highway 30.

Concrete pads for the signs were poured last fall and the digital signs have arrived at the DOT's Cedar Rapids office, but a transportation planner with the DOT's Cedar Rapids office, tells decorahnews.com, "We are having trouble getting the sign trusses from the manufacturer so (there isn't) a firm "done by" date.  Our intent is to finish them this season."

Two of the new signs will be on Interstate 380 near the 29th Street bridge, another will be at 66th Street and Interstate 380, a fourth will be on Highway 30 near Jappa Road and the fifth will be on Highway 30 near Knapp Road.

The Iowa Department of Transportation now has over 100 digital message signs statewide.  DOT Officials say the signs are useful for getting emergency messages to motorists and for warning about road conditions.
