Luther College students Fatimetu Emhamed and Holly Harris have been awarded a $10,000 grant to travel to Algeria this summer to implement their Projects for Peace vision.

The Projects for Peace program, part of the Davis United World College Scholars Program, is aimed at supporting students to create and implement their ideas for building peace.

This summer Emhamed and Harris will travel to the southwestern desert region of Algeria where Western Saharan people live near Tindouf City as refugees. They will build bathroom facilities and an art room for Valencia Primary School, attended by many of the refugee children.

"I have wanted to do something to help the children at home and this project has given me the opportunity to do that," said Emhamed. "Jon Lund, executive director of the Center for Global Learning and International Admissions, helped us throughout the process of putting our project proposal together and continues to help us to make sure everything will go smoothly for the project this summer. I hope that Luther continues to participate in this effort because it helps communities in need and encourages Luther students' creativity."
