Iowa Democrats offer proposal: we will meet you halfway on school funding

Decorah School officials still don't know how much state aid the school district will receive next year.  Legislators have been deadlocked on how big of an increase should be given for state aid to school districts.

Now Democratic members of the State Senate have made a new proposal in hopes of breaking the lengthy logjam at the Capitol.

Earlier this session, Senate Democrats voted for a 4 percent increase in basic school funding while House Republicans voted for a 1.25 percent increase.  "To resolve this issue, we offered a compromise that meets the Republicans halfway: an increase of basic school funding next school year by 2.625 percent."  This compromise is exactly halfway between the Senate and House positions.  The compromise proposal by legislative Democrats is the first new proposal by either side.

School districts must certify their budgets by April 15th.
