The Decorah Public Library now has copies available for check out of two books that will be discussed at the library in April.
Adam Hochschild's "King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa" will be discussed Thursday, April 16th at 6:30 p.m. The book chronicles how King Leopold II of Belgium seized for himself the vast and mostly unexplored territory surrounding the Congo River. Carrying out a genocidal plundering of the Congo, he looted its rubber, brutalized its people, and ultimately slashed its population by ten million- all the while shrewdly cultivating his reputation as a great humanitarian.
Timothy Schaffert's novel "The Swan Gondola" will be discussed Thursday, April 30th at 6:30 p.m. Set against the setting of a World's Fair, "The Swan Gondola" is a romantic story about two lovers caught in a moment of history.
