Northeast Iowa Community College officials have released details of a fire at approximately 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the (NICC) Iowa's Dairy Center, located just south of the Calmar campus on Highway 150.
The fire originated in the robotics room. Alarms in the facility sounded. Staff members who were milking in an area adjacent to the robotics room discovered the smoke. The Calmar and Ft. Atkinson fire departments responded to the fire and had the fire under control by approximately 9:30 p.m. There were no injuries or animals hurt.
Damage estimates are not currently known. Damage was apparently limited to interior walls and ceiling trusses; the roof and exterior walls remain intact. On Monday NICC and dairy center officials re-established the robotics system and milking resumed in the afternoon.
