The Decorah City Council voted 6-0 Tuesday morning to make an appointment to fill the vacancy in the 3rd Ward seat on the City Council. Long-time City Council member Paul Wanless announced last Monday that he was stepping down from the council after serving more than 19 years.
A notice of the opening on the city council will be published Thursday, April 2nd. Interested people will have until 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 16th to submit an application to the City of Decorah, 400 Claiborne Drive, P.O. Box 138, Decorah, IA 52101 to Hemesath@decorahia.org.
The Decorah City Council will vote Monday, April 20th on an appointment. The person appointed will serve on the city council until November of this year, when the seat will be up for election.
If 32 people sign a petition, there could be a special election for the seat. People will have 14 days following the appointment to file a petition calling for a special election. That election would be held in June and would cost approximately $1,600 to hold.
