A petition drive asking the Decorah City Council and Winneshiek County Board to create a public municipal utility to provide broadband high-speed fiber optic internet connections to area businesses and residents continues to collect signatures.
A group of Decorah citizens is one-quarter the way to its stated goal to collect 500 signatures in support of the concept. Decorah resident Jarrad Walter has created a Facebook event in support of the petition drive: https://www.facebook.com/events/1581941355381102/.
Earlier a petition web page was created for people to sign to show their support of the concept: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/decorah-municipal-high-speed-fiber-optic-Internet
The Decorah group will meet with members of the Metronet board on Thursday to begin discussions of the topic.
(Disclosure: decorahnews.com's Paul Scott, who wrote this story, is one of the members of the citizens group working to get public access to the fiber optic cable used by Metronet).
