This week has been proclaimed as "Through With Chew Week" in an effort to call attention to the use of smokeless tobacco, to reduce the use of smokeless tobacco among young people, and to give support to anyone who wants to quit.
Officials at Helping Services offices in Decorah note that smokeless tobacco is addictive and can cause oral cancer, especially in the cheeks, gums, and throat.
Youth across Northeast Iowa are taking part in this week through groups at their high schools. Students will be busy hanging posters, plastering stickers everywhere, and giving presentations.
