Why did the shooting of an unarmed black man provoke such an outcry in Ferguson, Missouri?
A book by University of Iowa professor Colin Gordon--"Mapping Decline: St. Louis and the Fate of the American City"--uses GPS maps and other such visual aids to discuss the issue.
Corden tells decorahnews.com that he had to find ways to use census records and other statistical information dating back to 1930 in St. Louis to create GPS maps that showed how zoning and redevelopment were handled in St. Louis. Gordon's book examines the role race played in public decisions about the growth of the city.
Gordon's book will be discussed by a book group at Luther College at 4:00 p.m. on three successive Thursdays--February 26th, March 5th and March 12th. Gordon himself will join the book discussion on March 12th, prior to giving a lecture about his book at 7:00 p.m.
